Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Mother’s Day is next weekend and if you’re like me, you can think of a million things you’d like to get, but it’s sometimes tough to figure out what to give the women in your life.  It’s usually  a safe bet that if you like it, so will your mom, sister, friend, etc.  So, I’m sharing a few of my favorite things in the hopes that it will give you some ideas for yourself or someone you love. Enjoy!

There’s nothing better than a house that smells lovely and a good candle is the secret! The Bridgewater Candles in “Sweet Grace” smell absolutely divine and have a lasting scent that you can detect long after it’s blown out. To top it off, they come in a wide array of beautiful containers that you won’t mind setting on your counter.

Oddly similar in scent is the “Glamorous Wash” by Tyler Candle Company, which leaves your clothes smelling absolutely heavenly. I add a capful to my washer with my sheets and towels and a small container lasts for 6 months! A friend of mine gave this to me as  gift a few years ago and now it’s always on my wish list.

Clearly I like things that smell nice, myself included, and my new favorite scent is MAC’s Creme de Nude perfume. In two words it is clean and lovely and you seriously can’t go wrong with it.

The perfect bra is more than just an urban legend. Made by Natori, the Pure Lux T-shirt bra will be your new best friend. They’re a little pricey for a bra, but once you put it on, you’ll understand why. Trust me.

Reese Witherspoon’s new book “Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, and Baking Biscuits” is the perfect addition to any southern woman’s coffee table. I’ve loved reading all about her childhood, her heritage, and most of all, her sacred family recipes!

This Dyson Animal Cordless Vacuum cleaner lives up to its name and was honestly a game-changer for me. No more bending down with a dustbuster or dragging a cord around the house for quick pickups. Do yourself, or someone you love, a favor and buy this today!

Fine lines and bad hair are a thing of the past with a good silk pillowcase. You’ll sleep in luxury and feel like a million bucks with this hypoallergenic, 100% silk, 600 thread count case for your pillow and it won’t break the bank either.  I love mine so much that I travel with it!

Everyone loves a roadie, so why not do it in style with this marble stainless steel wine tumbler from Oggi? It comes with a seal-tight lid that keeps spills from happening and a super cute design to boot!  She may need more than one at this price 😉

And what woman doesn’t love something indulgent to eat and drink? Spoil her (or yourself) with my new favorite Pinot Noir Rose by Longford Estates and Sea Salt Butterscotch Caramels from Trader Joe’s. If you aren’t lucky enough to have a TJ’s nearby, click this link for the chocolates and you can get them online.

Cheers to a fabulous Mother’s Day celebrating that special lady in your life!

Hail thee festival day!

Cuffed denim shortsBack to school means festival season around these parts and I can’t pass up a good opportunity to sample food trucks, hear live music, and people watch.  But to fully enjoy yourself, you’ve gotta be prepared.

Let’s be honest. It’s still warm through October in the south, so cool, loose-fitting clothing is a must.  I usually opt for a sleeveless, flowy shirt in a print that will hide sweat and a bralette or sports bra layered underneath because nothing is more uncomfortable than a hot, lacy, metal contraption. Also, you’ve really got to think about which bottoms you choose. Chances are you’ll be sitting on the ground at some point, so white/light colors are obviously out.  I always go with good ole jean shorts (my favorites are linked below), but anything dark and loose that won’t show sweat or dirt easily is a good choice. Footwear, too, is key. You want comfortable and cool, and these Birkenstock dupes from Target are definitely both plus a good dose of cute!

Wayfarer Sunnies / Crossbody Bag & Tote

And while clothing is important, accessories are critical! I am all about the Wayfarer sunglasses these days and fortunately, you can grab them for cheap anywhere from the Dollar Tree to Wal-Mart.  Inexpensive sunnies mean you can have multiple pairs and not sweat it if you break or lose them–a real possibility at an outdoor event like a festival.  Lastly, a cross-body purse is a must, allowing you to be hands-free so you can shop, hold your food, etc.  My favorite is this one that comes inside a larger tote.  I put all of my “necessities” in the small cross-body and then when I go somewhere, like a festival, that I need a lighter/smaller option, I just grab it and leave the bigger one at home or in my car.

Red white and swoon

My neighborhood is pretty dang awesome. I can say that because it was like that long before my family moved in and will likely be that way long after.  For example, this Independence Day, we’ll all dress up in our patriotic attire, decorate our wagons, strollers, and bikes, and parade behind a firetruck down to the neighborhood clubhouse. Once we’re there, we’ll play games, swim, and eat grilled hot dogs and hamburgers like a good old-fashioned backyard barbecue. It really is idyllic.

July 2016 Hayes (29)

So when it came time to plan my outfit for the big day this year, I was thrilled to see so many fun and patriotic options at none other than Charming Charlie. If you’ve been reading my blog all along, you know I’ve been “Charmed by Charlie” before, and this time was no exception. Their prices are fantastic, they run wonderful promotions, and their items are always fresh and stylish and a little bit whimsical.

I mean, how cute is this navy and white striped tank? I’m wearing a small, so I’d say it was TTS, and it’s only $19. But the best part? The back! Look at that bow detail!! You could wear it alone, over a swimsuit, or even over a cute lace bralette. Either way, it’s comfy, easy, and super cute!

And that red star purse? Who cares if I’m going to a pool party? I’m bringing this purse come hell or high water! It’s just too cute to leave at home. It’s vegan leather, features a crossbody strap, and is just the right size for all of my necessities. I also found some other great accessories that really helped complete this fun and festive outfit.

The red, white, and blue ball earrings, known as “The Austin”, are only $12 and really round out this outfit, especially if you are wearing it beyond the pool. The straw fedora with the red, white, and blue band is $15 and let’s be honest, is it really a pool party without a fedora? I think not. That means for the whole outfit, we’re talking less than $60. So, if you want to go out with a bang this 4th, check out Charming Charlie’s “Americana” line and have your friends “Red, White, and Swoon” over your outfit! Happy 4th y’all!

Surprise! It’s Marshalls!

I’m a regular at Marshall’s and TJ Maxx, and while I know it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and it requires a little digging, I absolutely love it. Maybe that’s the “hunter” in me or maybe it’s thanks to my mother, “The Bargainista”.  But it has become a regular weekly event for me. Sometimes I walk out with nothing. Other times, I score big time.  But more often than not, I leave with only half of the items I could have purchased because in truth, there are just that many great finds there. Again, you have to dig, but they’re there. Trust me.

Today I popped in to get one item, which is seriously a joke, even to me, but I genuinely did go there with a purpose. Instead, I left with three bags. Now, some of it was stuff I “needed” and some was stuff I just couldn’t walk away from.

But out of a dressing room filled with clothing, I only bought two items (I need a pat on the back for showing such restraint!) and they are both pretty amazing if you ask me…..and great prices of course! The first is this darling romper with the colorful embroidery and tassel ties.  I love the pattern, the colorful details, and especially the adjustable spaghetti straps.

cinco de mayo 5-1

At only $16.99, this is definitely going to be on repeat in my summer wardrobe. The brand is Blue Island, which I’ve seen there before, but they also had several other styles and brands that were similar and just as cute.  If you are looking for a Cinco de Mayo outfit, or just a great summer staple, head to Marshalls.

I also walked away with these precious shorts for less than $15. Now, I know they look like regular shorts with their cuffed hem, pleats, and other tailored details, but they are made by MPG, one of my favorite athleisure brands, and are made out of that great moisture-wicking material we all love.

I can see myself wearing these to run errands as easily as to the gym, which is what it’s all about for me: multi-functionality! To find your own Marshalls surprises, head to the one nearest you and check back often for the greatest gets!
